First Firing of the Gas Car Kiln

After a lot of preparation, Red Barn Pottery had its first gas-kiln firing on January 20, 2017. It was an entirely experimental load consisting mainly of test tiles, bowls, and a few pieces that members were willing to contribute to the experiment, having been forewarned that it could possibly go badly, because we had no familiarity with the kiln or its operation.  We were all extremely excited when the firing not only went very well, the results were wonderful.  The kiln reached the correct temperature, and with a few insignificant exceptions, reduction was obtained and produced beautiful results.  We are all encouraged to go on to even better results in the future.  Special thanks to expert potter Jim Reinert (seen in the photos), who not only helped to build the studio and reconstruct the kiln purchased from Grand Rapids, he was at Red Barn Pottery's studio to assist us in handling our first firing, providing much-needed advice, encouragement and inspiration.
